Tier 2 of the points-based system (PBS) was implemented in the UK on 27 November 2008. One of the main requirements of the PBS is that, in most cases*, applicants applying to work in the UK in skilled or highly skilled positions must demonstrate an acceptable level of English. Applicants from majority English speaking countries (Antigua & Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, the US) will be able demonstrate that they meet the English language requirement by producing their passports. Those who are not of a majority English speaking country but have a UK equivalent degree taught in English must be able to verify the equivalency of the qualification using NARIC and produce their original degree certificate to show that they meet the language requirements. Those who do not fall into either of these categories will need to take and pass one of the tests on the Approved English Language List and produce the test pass certificate when applying for entry clearance. * Intra company transferees will only be required to demonstrate that they meet the English language ability if they wish to stay in the UK beyond 3 years.
